You'll miss a lot in this desert if you're not inquisitive. So keep asking questions about the things you see, even obvious ones if they puzzle you - that's what 'being scientific' really means: asking the right questions and finding out the answers.
So don't settle for just listing the species you see and checking them off on your checklist. Dig deeper - ask 'why' and 'how' questions as well as 'what' questions!
